Our establishment

Parks Victoria commenced operations on 12 December 1996 and were established on 4 July 1998 as a statutory authority under the Parks Victoria Act 1998 to manage Victoria’s diverse parks system. Re-established on 12 September 2018 under the Parks Victoria Act 2018, with clear objectives and functions, we now act as a strengthened park management agency for the community and the environment. We care for around 18 per cent of Victoria’s landmass (4.1 million hectares) reporting to the Minister for Environment. We are also accountable to the Minister for Ports and Freight, for the management of local ports and piers.

What we manage

The network of parks that we manage includes national and state parks, marine parks and sanctuaries, wilderness areas, metropolitan, regional and reservoir parks. Within this network, there are thousands of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cultural heritage sites, a range of historic gardens, several local ports and major rivers, many piers, and around 70 per cent of Victoria’s coastline. We are also the Local Port Manager for Port Phillip Bay, Western Port and Port Campbell, and the Waterway Manager for the Yarra and Maribyrnong rivers.

Parks Victoria is also defined as a dam manager under the Strategic Framework for Dam Safety Regulation (2014) under the Water Act 1989

Parks Victoria currently has more than 75,000 built assets across the entire estate that connect people to nature in a safe and sustainable manner represented by various built asset classes. These assets include, but are not limited to, numerous elevated structures, bridges, culverts (pedestrian and/or vehicle), raised boardwalks, elevated tower(s), viewing platforms, and stairs that form part pedestrian paths and/ trails, visitor centres and other structures such as toilets, roads, buildings and dams.
